Help to cycle around the world in one day!

Cycle around Mondello Race Track and help raise funds for Epilepsy on Saturday 21st 2012

The Mondello Cycle Challenge

Sign up now!!

On the 21st of January we are organizing a massive cycling challenge that we want YOU to take part in!

The Challenge:

In excess of 250 cyclists will come together in one location, Mondello Race Track, Donore, Naas Co.Kildare on Saturday 21st of January 2012.

We are asking each cyclist is asked to raise or donate €100 to take part in this event. *see below for more details*

Together all cyclists will pedal around the 3.5 km lap loop for up to 6 hours and clock up 18,000 miles collectively. This event is being organized to generate funds for Brainwave, The Irish Epilepsy Association.

Please note this is not a race, we are accepting cyclists of any degree to take part so for obvious safety reasons we would ask each cyclist to be aware it is not that type of event and to ride as safely as possible , there will be 2 lanes on the track to facilitate this.

Fast ___ or Leisurely___ please state on your application form which suits you.

Requirements:

- You will need to bring your bike (with spare tubes and tyres).  *Tip* make sure to check the pressure the night before to reduce your prep time

- A helmet (mandatory no cyclist will be allowed to take part in the vent without one)

- Odometer  though not mandatory it is very important, it will determine the distance each cyclist covers so that the total miles covered by everyone can be added up. *If you don’t have one don’t worry, a count of your laps will have to be kept but if you have one please bring it!!* Otherwise most bike shops supply them, if you have any queries on attaching it to the bike or how / where you may purchase these please send your question addressed to John Jo on info@simonsepiccycle.com.

- A change of clothes. We recommend a pair of cycling shorts and top, top & bottom wet gear (it is in January in Ireland after all), a towel and spare change of clothes to wear after the event, extra socks are a must in case it is nippy!

- Food and refreshments will be provided on the day but for anyone with allergy or specific dietary needs we recommend including this information with your application form when entering this event. You can contact Nicola who is part of the team on info@simonsepiccycle.com. Otherwise if anyone prefers to please feel free to bring your own food and beverages.

- There will be an Ambulance service on duty over the course of the day. Again if there are any medical details that will affect your participation please make sure you include these in your application form, we would ask anyone who has severe heart problems to refrain from taking part.

- We have left an option below for anyone part of  a club to state whether or not they are covered by insurance, but *be assured if your club or your self are not insured, Brainwave has insurance taken out for all cyclists part of a club or not*

Time:

Aim to be there for 9 am. There will be ample room for parking but it will take a bit of time to organize and get everyone together at the start line, so arrive early!

We start at 10am sharp as the amount of daylight will restrict us at this time of year, we estimate a good 6-7 hours finishing up at 3-4 pm (depending on how long we have daylight for). 6 hours will give us all plenty of daylight and time to cover the estimated distance.

MORE INFORMATION

The Distance:

Why 18,000 miles?

18,000 miles or 28,968.192 km (to be exact) is our target for the day. Simon Hutchinson intends to cover that distance during The World Cycle Race in February this year ( for more details check out the rest of the website!). As far as history is concerned covering that distance in one place by so many riders in Ireland has never been attempted before. Our challenge will be trying to be the first!

The Track

As above stated the total length of the track will be 3.5km long ( 2.17 miles).

How many laps will you need to cover?

*To give an idea of what could be covered*

Taking an average cyclist who can cycle for 16 miles per hour, in 6 hours you can cover 96 miles. If we have 250 people who cover the same distance that will be 24,000 miles! We only need to cover 18,000 miles leaving 250 cyclists with a very manageable 72 miles to cover altogether or 33/34 laps! Apart from asking everyone to ride as safely as possible we make no demands on how fast or slow anyone wishes to go. If you can and want to cycle further than 72miles in 6 hours there is nothing stopping you! It will mean we will cover the distance sooner!

How much is it to take part?

We are asking every cyclist to raise/donate  €100. All proceeds go to Brainwave, The Irish Epilepsy Association. Of course we will not turn away anyone who wishes to cycle, we do have costs to cover and this is an event being organized so as to raise as much as we can for Brainwave, if €100 euro is too much please make a donation you think is worth asking for cycling around the world in one day for! Otherwise please feel free to contact one of our team on info@simonsepiccycle.com for any queries.

If you wish to pay online please visit the MyCharity Page here

Past event news;

Static Cycle in Harris’ SuperValu store in Bailieborough a huge success!

Massive thanks to Lorraine Harris and all her staff in SuperValu, Bailieborough Co.Cavan, for helping out and supporting my team and I with the first two static cycles over Friday 30th of October and Saturday 1st of November. I managed to pedal over 543km over the two days and with with the help of the SuperValu team all my volunteers a massive €1,800 was raised, which will certainly help my charity Brainwave – The Irish Epilepsy Association and support me in The Global Cycling Race next February!
