Simon’s Epic Cycle – The story behind the challenge

My name is Simon Hutchinson,

This year I will be competing in an unique cycling challenge, hoping to raise much needed funds and awareness for epilepsy during this event.

On the 18th of February 2012 cycling enthusiasts from around the world will convene to compete in the 1st ever race to cycle around the world which is being called ‘World Cycle Racing- Grand Tour’. Starting in London cyclists will have to pedal a gruelling minimum of 18,000 miles or 28,800km in just under 5 months. Winners may claim the coveted Guinness World Record for the ‘Fasted Circumnavigation of the Globe by Bicycle’.

Riders are given just 154 days to race around the clock and around the world setting off from Greenwich Park and finishing back there before the London Olympics are due to commence on the 27th of July.

The World Cycling Race is being specifically organised in this way so as to generate as much media attention as possible and also creates a fantastic lead-in story before the Olympics begin.

I hope to break the current world record set by the American Bruce Gordon, which stands at 154 days, 10 days faster than the previous record. I plan to cycle 140 out of the 154 days, averaging 129miles or 206 km per day, using the remainder of my time to fly/ferry when I have to, and also for the occasional day of rest (if any!). My route will bring me east taking in at least 21 countries, and you will find the route in greater detail above in the tab marked Route.

I am the only Irish competitor and hope to fly the flag for my country, raise money for epilepsy and bring home the record to Irish soil.

If you would like to find out more about the World Cycling Race, please feel free to contact me as the offical race website is nearly up and running
